Guide to Martyn’s Law and its impact

New guidance has been published to help those responsible for publicly accessible locations keep up to speed with new terrorism protection legislation.

Martyn’s Law is set to introduce significant changes for UK venues of all sizes – are you prepared?

The Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill, commonly referred to as Martyn’s Law, is scheduled to be included in the upcoming parliamentary session.

Named in tribute to Martyn Hett who was one of 21 victims of the Manchester Arena terrorist attack in 2017, it aims to improve the UK’s approach to national security and public venue safety as a response to the increasing need for heightened security measures in public spaces

It is expected to introduce mandatory security measures tailored to the scale and nature of public venues and events, enhancing preparedness against potential terrorist threats.

It affects –

  • Premises and events that are open to the public
  • Premises designated for activities such as entertainment, leisure, retail, or food and drink services
  • Venues with a capacity of 100 or more individuals, including both indoor buildings and outdoor locations with defined boundaries and controlled access.
